Mozambique, 9 October 2013 The WFP Centre of Excellence is the result of a solid partnership between WFP and Brazil. Its work is based on collaborating with national governments, research institutions, international development agencies, and NGOs. The Centre’s South-South cooperation and advocacy initiatives have a multiplying effect: those receiving direct technical assistance from the Centre contribute to the dissemination of concepts and messages related to tackling hunger and malnutrition. The WFP Centre works with government counterparts, smallholder farmers and local communities to ensure that policies and programmes will achieve the expected impacts. A smallholder farmer in Mozambique provides food for the local school feeding programme. Strong smallholder agriculture increases a community’s resilience to shocks and improves nutrition. Connecting smallholder farmers to markets is crucial for sustainable development, and public purchase programmes create a stable demand that generates income and encourages better production. The school feeding policies developed with support from the WFP Centre emphasize the involvement of local communities in implementing the programmes and in overseeing their execution. This includes getting families involved in preparing the meals. In five years, the WFP Centre has supported 25 countries in the design and implementation of school meals programmes that purchase food from local smallholder farmers, as a means to increase nutrition among schoolchildren, improve educational indicators, and strengthen local economies.
