Tajikistan, March 2010 This month, WFP launched a carbon emissions calculator for all flights booked by the organization. This new electronic tool can record the total amount of carbon dioxide or "greenhouse gas" emissions from any flight, giving WFP a way to measure and track the effect it has on the environment. “This is a major achievement,” says Rocco Leone, chief of Administrative Services. “It’s imperative that we be innovative”. The objective of our carbon emissions calculator is to be able to both track and report on our travel patterns. By measuring and monitoring our carbon footprint in travel, WFP can better understand where to concentrate attention to minimize our impact on the planet. The next steps are to reduce our emissions and then find ways to compensate for emissions that cannot be avoided. Photo: WFP/Heather Hill

Tajikistan, December 2009 In Tajikistan the burden of rural poverty is shouldered mostly by women, who raise the children alone after their husbands disappear into Russiaís remittance labour pool, move away to take a second wife, or die. WFP distributes a two-month food ration to the most vulnerable families in Tajikistan at two times of the year - in the pre-harvest "lean season" and before the winter sets in. In 2009 WFP gave food to some 250,000 vulnerable people in November and December, the biggest such distribution in four years. Among the beneficiaries were many widows and abandoned wives. This food distribution took place in the Essanboy district, one of the poorest parts of what is already the poorest country in the Commonwealth of Independent States. The wheat flour, vegetable oil, dried peas and salt that WFP distributes give beneficiaries a small measure of freedom from penury and desperation Photo: WFP/Heather Hill
